Dancing double basses and singing saxophones. Lah-Lah is a brand new performance where instruments come to life in the world of a little girl who can’t sit still! A musical spell will be cast over children aged 2-6 by some of Sydney’s most vibrant and entertaining musicians.

Lah-Lah and her lovable musical friends took Sydney by storm earlier this year when their magical children’s music show captivated young people and parents alike. Now, less than six months after their debut, this extraordinary musical group is back by popular demand announcing a second Sydney concert series and an exciting new broadcast partnership with world leaders in kid’s entertainment, Nickelodeon. Lah Lah’s Big Live Band will make its premiere on the Nick Jr. channel from September 13, weekdays at 8am and 4pm, and Saturdays and Sundays at 12pm.

Lah-Lah introduces little people aged 2 to 6 years to the wonderful world of music. The group return to Sydney from 7-18 October at the Enmore Theatre, featuring all the favourite characters and toe-tapping tunes of their January shows, plus several exciting new additions.

Lah-Lah is the brain-child of musicians Tina Harris - ex-Opera Australia - and her husband Mark Harris - member of three-time ARIA award winning gyp-rock group,

The script for the DVD has been written by Valery Foley, also a writer for Hi-5. Director and choreographer of the DVD and live show is Deb Ryan who worked on Warner Bros USA’s remake of Banana Splits and has worked in kids television since 1999.Featuring a variety of musical styles from pop, jazz and world music to a touch of Mozart, parents will be tapping and jiving to a whole new beat.

Something very magical happens to little Lah-Lah one night when reading her book - all the characters in her story come to life as instruments! Meeting her friends is lots of fun and Lah-Lah learns all about their funny sounds while she sings and dances.

This show is in a special intimate Proms format, children and adults up close and personal with the 5 piece band. Strictly limited seating available. Book early, tickets selling fast.

Come Out Festival

I had the priveledge to see a range of performances at this fabulous children's festival:

Children's Cheering Carpet, a co-production betweeen Italy and Australia using incredible lighting sensors, on a journey from bush to city.

Freaky, a terrific collaboration between Circus Monoxide and Cirkidz in SA. A combination of budding circus performers,matched with the experience and drama of Circus Monoxide. It was a high energy, engaging performance, which beautifully used the burgeoning skills of the Cirkidz crew with the Monoxide performers.

Explosion Therapy, by Terrapin Puppet Theatre, just like the name says, an Explosion of "stuff". Really creative and interesting use of lighting and movement, creating something 2 dimensional and cartoonish from 3D life.

In a way this was similiar to The 2 Dimensional Life of Her by Fleur Elise, a work in progress where Elise is actually working on film and animation. The premise being an artist's process in a studio canvass. Again interesting use of lights, cartooning, special effects.

Come out produced a new work Books & Bits, which was a great quiz style romp through children's books. Fabulous seeing and hearing the reaction and interaction of the kids with the authors.

Plop by Windmill, was of course a beautifully rendered piece of work, geared for 1-4 years.

Boats by Terrapin was a great piece of theatre and clever use of puppets and imagery.

So in all a great selection and range of performances. I wish I had bought my daugher with me!

ADELAIDE FRINGE FESTIVAL REVIEW: The Grimstones – Hatched

It was cold, wet and overcast in Adelaide, setting the scene for The Grimstones – Hatched: a quirky puppet performance about a girl named Martha, who can see people’s dreams and, in an effort to lighten the heart of her grieving mother, she decides to use magic to make a baby brother.

Performed in the creaking Le Cascadeur, Hatched begins with an empty stage and a back drop of black curtain. The music starts and large sized books are brought to the stage by two eccentric characters and the performance begins. Each book introduces the peculiar members of the Grimstone family, in scrawly old world writing, and opens up-to reveal a small set, in miniature detail.

Having the opportunity to look up close at these tiny worlds reveals a great attention to detail, from the tiny dressmakers prints in the mother Velvetta’s sewing studio, to the myriad of little magic potion bottles in Grandfather, Elcho’s apothecary. These careful constructions provide a window into the Grimstone’s lives and the masterful puppetry brings life to the puppet members of this tale.

The puppet family are joined by Gertrude Grimstone (Asphyxia) the great great great great grand daughter of the Grimstone’s of our storey, and her helper, August (Paula Dowse). Far from being mere background puppeteers, they engage with the puppets and the audience, as well as each other, to create a dynamic atmosphere that compliments the story and creates empathy with the characters.
